A Salute to Vietnam Veterans luncheon and presentation of Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pins,sponsored by The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109 and The American Legion Post 109. The Auxiliary is an approved partner of the United States Vietnam War Commemoration Program.
Special guest and speaker for this event is Col. John “Ace” Astle USMC retired, a decorated Vietnam Veteran who saw active duty as a helicopter pilot. He is also a former Maryland State Senator who got Governor Hogan to sign off on “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” on March 29th of each year. Senator Astle is the subject of the novel “Jungle Combat” which contains transcripts of the recorded letters he sent to his mother during his service in Vietnam from 1968 – 1969.

Chesapeake Bay Trust Meeting – (Invitation Only)
Along with the late former Senate President Mike V. Miller, John played a key role in the establishment of the Chesapeake Conservation Corps, a green jobs development program managed by the Trust. John’s legacy at the Trust is that of steadfast champion.

Memorial Day Event at Charlotte Hall

A Memorial Day ceremony was held at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. The Keynote speaker, former Maryland State Senator John Astle is standing to the left of the American Flag and Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary George Owings is to the right of the American Flag. Both gentlemen served in the United States Marine Corps and are Vietnam Veterans.
